Rock & Roll highlighted the Championship Round in Houston |
To quote PBR arena announcer Brandon Bates, during the long round Saturday, "It's raining cowboys"! Out of 35 rides in the long round, there were 10 rides and only 2 in the Championship round. Bulls win!! Ok, ok for a bull-lover like me, it was awesome! but I know for the event and crowd watching, those are not great numbers!
So here is my 2 cents about the big, beautiful bovines Saturday. I immediately had to start questioning the judges when Studly scored a 22 + 22 + 20.5 + 19. How does a bull score 22's and a 19 on the same out? Were there 2 bulls bucking and I missed one? I wish someone would explain this to me!
Play Harder had a great buck off (43.75pts) but ran over Frank Newsome afterwards. Amazing Frank popped up and looked no worse for wear! Cracker Jack (43.5pts) was a nice bucker with big drop. Blonde Bomber was outstanding (44 pts), as was Toy Soldier (43.25pts). Loose Canon (43.25pts) had a nice direction change and immediately showed some snotitude, pawing the ground and looking like he wanted to charge! Black Widow had an outstanding out (44.25pts) with a powerful slam of his rider. He is 5 years old, from Lufkin Ranch & Rodeo, and he seems to be getting better with age. Bucking Machine improves with each out (44pts) and Tap Out had a strong buck off (42.75pts). V-5 is unridden in 8 BFTS outs and he had big roll and kick out to continue his buck off streak (43.25pts). Hee Bee Gee Bee was outstanding, and seemed to get stronger as the ride went on (44.5pts). He helped Douglas Duncan to the round win with a 90.25 pt score!
Motown Magic had a really strong out (42.25pts), as did Keepin' It Real (43.25pts) with a nice direction change to buck off the rider. I love this white bull with big black spots on it! A debut bull on the BFTS was Bubba's Got Rack, from Roy Carter Bucking Bulls. He was a great bull with big horns and a nice display of snotitude after dumping his rider! (42.25pts). Bad Moon had a strong out with good spin and kick (43pts) and T-Rex also had big kick, almost going vertical once the rider was off! (43.75pts)
In the championship round, I was most impressed with Shepherd Hills Tested, who had the high bull score of the event with 46 points! He is unridden in his BFTS career, a RANK bull! Jack Daniel's After Party, Shepherd Hills Trapper, Rock & Roll and Will James also had strong outs and big buck offs! Asteroid (45.25pts) was ridden a little longer but not to 8 seconds. Seems to me Asteroid was a little flat and not as rank as we've seen him, but still a good out.
All in all, this pen of bulls was strong! and seemed to handle the big arena much better than last week. They were fun and feisty! Congratulations to Chase Outlaw for winning the event!
