The Land of Enchanting Bulls

New Mexico is known as the “Land of Enchantment”.  Having visited there at least a half-dozen times, I believe this to be completely true.  However, this past weekend, I was not put under a spell by the land, but by the bucking bull power that was showcased in Albuquerque.  In particular, I was enchanted by the reigning World Champion bucking bull, Bushwacker.

I’m not sure if a cowboy is considered lucky to draw Bushwacker, or unlucky, but in either case Jordan Hupp drew this mighty bovine and did his best to hang on.  Bushwacker bucked him off in 3.5 seconds, and as Jordan was heading towards the ground, Bushwacker made a reverse move and gave Jordan a “ little pat on the back” to remember him by.  Bushwacker was simply stunning!  I could use words like powerful, strong, ridiculously smart, big jump, big kick, fast and agile.  All of these words describe Bushwacker’s out, but the word that keeps coming back to me is stunning!  I am in awe of this great athlete every time I see him buck.  Coming back from surgery, Bushwacker has some ground to make up, which he seems to be doing effortlessly.

His score of 46.5 points was the high bull score of the weekend.  He absolutely deserved it and more.  Ty Murray said “Bushwacker was showing off” as he reversed and jumped once Jordan was off.  I’d pay money to watch Bushwacker show off!  Heck, I’d pay money just to watch him dig in the dirt!  But no matter, I believe all of us bull-loving fans are privileged to watch him perform and follow his career.  Bushwacker is a once in a lifetime superstar!

Ok, now to the rest of the event :) ...

As I went back and reviewed my notes, I realized that I was writing the same names down, multiple times, because of their great efforts.   Rowdy All Night went out twice, scoring 43 and 44.5 points.  He was quick, with strong moves and big kick.  Prince Albert had 2 impressive outs, displaying big kicks & jumps, fast spin and a little snotitude after the rider was off!  Cooper Tires How We Roll had me cheering as he tried to jump out of the chute, knocking one of the judges backwards in the process!  (I think there is some cosmic justice there!)  Cooper Tires Grey Ghost scored 43.25 & 44 pts on his 2 outs.  Both trips he was really good and strong.  (I think he is one of the cutest bulls going....if it’s ok to call a bull cute?)

Grey Ghost.....so cute!

Tremors gave Ty Pozzobon the winning ride in round 1 with a great bull score of 44 pts and then Tremors was out again in Round 3 with a huge explosive jump out of the chute and a quick whip of his back end bucking off Duncan.  He was awarded 45 points for that out.  Lil’ Red Cat was rank on Saturday night scoring 43.75 pts and was out again Sunday and used a big direction change to eject Palermo, score 44.5 pts.

Sam T. Straight was out twice, dumping his rider quickly both times, with extensive force.  He scored 42.75 and 43.25 points for his efforts.  Gator Bend is a handsome black and white bull with big horns.  He scored 43.75 pts bucking off Palermo and then was almost ridden by Lostroh on Sunday, scored 42.75 pts.  It would have been the first time Gator Bend was ridden.  Motown Magic had a great out Saturday with a big, explosive jump out of the chute, scored 43 pts.  Mr. Utah slammed Dirteater to the ground with a strong move Friday night, scored 43.25 pts, then proceeded to stare down the Bull Fighters!  On Sunday Mr. Utah bucked off Nunes, scored 44 pts.  Trainable, a bull from D&H Cattle who I’d not seen before, was strong in both of his outs, ejecting Alves on Saturday for a 44.25 pt score and then ejected Roy on Sunday for a 43 pt score.  D&H Bulls are always big, solid bulls with huge kick!

Chad Berger's K55 Smack Down

Bulls in the 15/15 Bucking Battle Saturday night were all stars, but some shined more than others!  Smack Down easily bucked off Koon in 3.45 seconds, for a 45.75 pt score.  Jack Daniels After Party easily bucked off Shivers in 2.21 seconds for a 45.75 pt score.  (Sadly, Shivers broke his collarbone and we all await to hear how long he will be out.  Prayers for a speedy recovery!)  Rango, also scored a 45.75 pts bucking off the eventual Albuquerque winner, JB Mauney, in 2.06 seconds.  Buckey had strong, powerful jumps and got his rider off in 3.06 seconds.  I was really disappointed in his 43.75 pt score - he deserved better!  Luke Snyder won this special round on Party All The Time.  It was a huge 90 point ride, with a bull score of 44 points.  Both Cowboy and Bull were outstanding!  The round ended with Bushwacker’s 28th straight buck-off, and the weekend  high bull score of 46.5 points.  Simply stunning!

Overall, I thought Albuquerque was a great event!  I enjoyed having 3 nights of bull riding, and I am still enjoying the enchanting power of the bulls!
