Last Cowboy Standing...Last Stadium Event of 4....Last of the good bull scores?

High Bull Score Winner, Smack Down

This past Saturday night, Detroit hosted the PBR’s “Last Cowboy Standing” at Ford Field.  I enjoyed the TV coverage of the event, but I can say, as a bull lover, these one night events leave me wanting more!!  It’s just not enough!!  So, in my humble opinion, I’m glad that these one night events are done and we can resume the regular 2 and 3 day events!

Once again, I was confused and befuddled by the bull scores.  I will always champion the bulls and always say the scores are too low.  But there was an outstanding pen of bulls this past weekend, and the judges saw fit to only award one score 45 or higher.  I’m sorry but I don’t agree!  I’m just a fan, and I don’t boast of being an expert but with a field that includes rank bulls, all of whom preformed well, higher scores should have been awarded.  My other complaint was the TV broadcast did not include the bull scores.  I find that extremely frustrating!  As a bull fan, I want to know the score at the conclusion of the ride - high or low!

Round 1 included some newer bulls to the BFTS, as well as some solid, rank bulls we see often.  The high scores for Round 1 went to Hillbilly Bones 44.25 pts and Gas Tank, Mr. Slim, and Colored by Arctic 44 pts each.  A few bulls I made note of were Joe Kidd, who had steep jumps with big kick; Wipeout, who is a strong bull; Dragon’s Breath, who had nice direction changes in his buck off; Colored by Arctic, who had huge kick and an outstanding buck off in 1.48 seconds; and Captain, who was quite the jumper!

Superstar bulls Smack Down, King Lopez, Back Bender, Who Dat, Hwy 12 and Lincoln Electric’s Bring It highlighted Round 2.  The 14 bulls chosen for the second round were outstanding, only giving up 3 rides.  Smack Down led the charge with high bull score for the weekend with a 45.5 pt total, dumping his rider in 2.1 seconds.  He was strong, powerful and gets his body in to a U shape which makes him almost impossible to ride!  King Lopez was so impressive bucking off his rider in 2.82 seconds, but only awarded a 43.75 pt score, which I thought was way too low!  Mulligan Man had his rider on the ground in 2 seconds, scored 43 pts.  I believe that if a bull can get a cowboy off that fast, he is rank! hard to ride and bigger scores should be awarded for strength, power and intelligence!  Rango and Moon aka BigTexTrailers.com were both so strong in their buck-offs as well.  Once again, Buck Wild was “DQ’d” for chute behavior.  This bull is fantastic and I think he should given a better chance.  I’m not sure it is always his fault!

Round 3 included Party All the Time (44 pts), South Point (44.25pts) and Hank aka Blue Emu’s After the Pain (43.25 pts).  I was disappointed that Deja Blu Emu was “DQ’d” for lying down in the chutes.  I thought the rider could have taken him that way.

So, I am looking forward to more rounds of bull riding, big, rank, handsome bulls to entertain and hopefully better scoring, as these big boys deserve!

  1. I know many others who are frustrated that bull scores aren't shown as much as they used to be during events. I can see that new fans to the sport might not pay that much attention, but ardent fans certainly do. I really like Jeff's Riggin' Slinger--talk about "snotitude"!;-) No one compares to Chicken, but Smack Down is one handsome dude! I think Robson should have taken his final bull laying down, because he'd most likely have won the event if he had!:-)
