The Name Game, part 2

Earlier this year, I did a little digging because I’m fascinated with how bulls are named.  I guess it would be too easy to name them all Terminator, Killer, or Grumpy!  I’ve spent some time thinking if I ever owned a bull, what would I name him?  Cream Puff came to mind, but that’s NOT what I chose!  So I guess we will just have to wait and see if I ever get to own that bull and use that secret name!

Two of the PBR’s top Stock Contractors/breeders were kind enough to share some name stories with me over the break.  I tried to get some more stories but it seems there are lots of very busy stock contractors out there...and, good for them!

In my piece a few weeks ago, I shared the story of how our reigning bucking bull champion, Bushwacker, was named.  Julio Moreno and Kindra Pierce also shared these stories about some of their other bulls bucking right now.

“Class 6 Kat is a name created off of his bloodlines. Class 6 Kat is a Skat Kat son out of a Whitewater daughter. Whitewater rapids are categorized in classes, a Class 6 being the most severe. Of course, Kat was added to the name to include the Skat Kat name.

Mr. Feiger was named by our good friend and partner Guy Thomas. Mr. Feiger (human) was a dear friend of his, and his family, who was involved in the jumping horse world. This individual meant the world to the Thomas family and what better way to honor a late dear friend than naming a "bucking jose" as Julio likes to say.

Sue is a really mean bull with quite the "girly" name. We named him after the Johnny Cash song, "A Boy Named Sue."

Merlot Man, on the other hand is quite the "split personality" bull. One minute you trust him and he's a good as pie and the next he'll run you up the fence like he doesn't have any respect or manners whatsoever. So, that being said.... Merlot Man reminded us of the type of person who tends to have a different personality once alcohol is consumed. Funny, really.... but definitely quite fitting! However, Julio does enjoy a good glass of Merlot every once and a while. So, again... maybe two stories? Again, quite fitting! Haha.”

I personally think Sue is a great name!  I visited with Sue and his neighbor Charlie Bullware last year in Las Vegas.  He was charging at people all during the Fan Club Bull Housing Tour, but when it quieted down and it was just the 3 of us...Sue and Charlie were both quite calm and charming! ;)

Julie Ravenscroft and her husband Steve, owners of Ravenscroft Bucking Bulls, use a different method to naming their bulls.  This is what Julie shared with me.
“We name our bulls by a theme every year.  That helps us remember which year or group of calves each bull comes from.  We started doing this in 2004.  Below are some of our more well known bulls that had a theme name.  Some of our bulls on tour were sold before we named them, like My Space, Clam Digger, Satan's Own, Thunder Down Under, and South Point, to name a few.

Tightrope and Fistful of Dollars are “Clint Eastwood movies” theme.

Black Pearl and Parrothead are the “Pirate” theme.

Hippy Music and Pearl Jam are the “Music” theme.

Crab Legs, Time Bandit, Greenhorn, Big Catch, and Sea Legs are “Deadliest Catch” theme.

Bel Air and Boss are “Cars” theme.

Time Warp and The Kraken are “Rollercoasters” theme.

This year, our 2 year olds are named after the theme of fishing lures.  There is Alabama Jig, Slab Daddy Jig, Loco Lizard, Rat-L-Trap, Rebel Pop-R, Boogie Tail, and Might Ike (so far).

Not sure yet of a theme for next year, but thinking about "Money"!  Open to other suggestions.”

I personally thought “money” was a good theme but it will be exciting to see what the next crop of Ravenscroft bulls are named after.

My Space was looking for a good scratch in Pueblo!  I was happy to oblige! :)
I truly appreciate Julie Ravenscroft, Kindra Pierce and Julio Moreno sharing their stories with me.  Thank you for taking time out of your very busy schedules!  Us bull fans love to learn more about the magnificent animals you raise and care for!
